Fitting a Shower Into Your Tiny Bathroom

Filed under: Bathroom Showers — Tags: — Christopher @ 10:33 pm

People who live in urban apartments or old houses can face problems with installing a shower into their bathrooms. Most of these bathrooms are extremely small, and it may seem that since all the space is already taken up by existing fixtures, there’s no hope of ever having a shower. However, there are options available to give you that shower you want.

The first thing you could try is taking the bathtub completely out. In most of these types of accommodations, the bathtubs are old, large, and take up way more room than they need to. By removing this old tub, you’ll have the room you need to fit a fancy shower enclosure in the space instead. Unfortunately, this means no more long hot baths, but if you want to create more space, this may be your only option.

Before replacing your bathtub you need to realize that removing the tub will decrease the value of your property. Most potential buyers will expect there to be a bathtub. If you have a very large bedroom, you might consider adding a sunken bathtub to the bedroom in addition to adding the shower. You’ll find that a lot of people will really like this idea.

Maybe you have one of those nifty old claw foot bathtubs that are so in demand today. If you have sufficient ceiling height, you can add a showerhead to your bathtub. If you don’t have the height to work with, you can find shower heads on flexible hoses that you can attach to the faucet of your bathtub.

You might decide to forget the shower enclosure and the bathtub and just turn your entire bathroom into a shower. You will need to install walls and floors made of concrete or stone which could be rather costly, but the results will be truly amazing. Just be sure to add a floor drain. The problem with this kind of design may be where you’re going to put a toilet, sink, and mirror. If there’s room, you could put up a glass or Plexiglas partition and place your other fixtures behind the wall.

The more things you’re able to remove from your small bathroom will mean you have that much more additional room for a fancy shower. When you get to doing remodeling of this scope, you will probably need to find a professional contractor to do the work for you.

Pulling Off a Bathroom Makeover

Filed under: Bathroom Renovation — Tags: — Christopher @ 10:31 pm

You want your bathroom to be functional, but since it’s inside your home, it should really be more than that. A lot of people prefer a large room where they can escape to and relax and soak in a hot in a tub full of bubbles. Add some great-smelling, flickering candlelight, and the scene’s just about perfect. What a great way to end a long, hard day!

Nothing is worse in any bathroom than a bunch of clutter. Not only does my bathroom need to be large, I like it to be neat as well. How about sunken tub, or a shower unit with a skylight above to make you feel almost as if you’re showering outside in a soft, warm rain. Color is also critical in a smaller room, like a bath. Personally I think neutral colors are ideal. Since I don’t do mornings well, I don’t want the glare from the walls jolting me awake. My thoughts run to dark green accented by subtle lemon yellow and terracotta.

I like my room to be contemporary and modern. None of the nostalgic Victorian frills for me, although a few plants would be nice. We’re in the 21st century now, and all the hokey, passé stuff from the 20th century needs to pass on into oblivion. Anything that has to do with fish, boats, and seashells is completely off limits. If you want that stuff, go to the beach! I’m also okay with brass faucets and showerheads as long as they aren’t too fancy, but brushed nickel are really nice.

My bathroom also needs to be very easy to clean. No clutter to clean around, no rugs, and no fancy window treatments. As you can tell, I like everything to be shipshape. The walls have to be tiled for easy maintenance, and I might fill one complete wall with mirrors. No, I’m not going to sit around admiring myself. Mirrors can do a lot to make any space seem larger. Although everyone else may be stenciling these days, I pass. That’s just not my idea of a clean bathroom design.

If you watch some of the home makeover shows on T.V., you can get a lot of great ideas. However, watch out, because some of the stuff they tell you to do is totally out of the ballpark. The other day I saw a show about a trendy young couple who had designed their entire place themselves. The apartment was very modern and tasteful, but the bathroom was just plain weird. The apartment was designed totally without walls, so their two-person bathtub was out in the open where all could see.

It gets even stranger than that. The toilet did have a wall in front of it, but the wall was very thin, see-through glass. That’s because the husband wanted to be able to continue to have conversations with his wife while she was otherwise occupied. To each his own, I guess.
